Protect Excel Online Free: Password the Workbook
Protect Excel online free: Lock-Then-Share—password-protect or unlock a workbook. Not protect Word or PDF. CashPilot tool, free 100 MB; no cracking.

A protect Excel online free job is a .xlsx that should not open on the next laptop without a password—or a locked workbook you already own and need open again with the password you know.
Open it: Protect or Unlock Excel.
This page is Lock-Then-Share. It is not Protect Word online free. It is not Protect PDF online free. It is not Compress Excel. Hub: CashPilot Free Tools.
Keep an unlocked original, choose Protect or Unlock on the live card, stay under the size cap, download, open once, then share the password on a second channel.
Disclosure: Protect Excel is our own CashPilot Tools product. Facts match the live Excel Conversion card as of this writing.

Lock-Then-Share
LOCK-THEN-SHARE
1. COPY → unlocked original stays on your disk
2. TAB → Protect (new password) or Unlock (known password)
3. CAP → under the live MB limit (.xlsx)
4. OPEN → confirm the download with that password
5. SHARE → file on email; password on a second channel
A rate workbook going to a new client belongs here. A signed PDF packet belongs on protect PDF. A DOCX proposal belongs on protect Word.
“Share” means deliberate delivery: attachment and secret travel separately. Same-thread “password below” is not a lock—it is a courtesy note for whoever forwards the email.
What the live card actually does
Live notes from cashpilottools.com/excel-protect (re-check later):
- Title: Protect or Unlock Excel
- Protect encrypts the Excel file so it will not open without the password
- Unlock decrypts it again
- Choose an Excel (
.xlsx) file and a password - Free up to 100 MB
- Premium size locked until payment is enabled
- Processed for your request only; no permanent public library
- Live FAQ: Crack passwords? No — only with the correct password
- Open the downloaded file once before you send it
Catalog: Excel Conversion. Related tools on the card: Protect or Unlock PDF, Protect or Unlock Word.
Write the password down before you close the tab. Unlock jobs start as “I thought I would remember it.”
Use a one-off phrase. You still typed the secret into a form—even when processing is request-only. Do not reuse banking or inbox passwords.
If two people need the file and only one should keep editing later, lock the send-copy and keep the unlocked original. Unlocking and re-protecting in a loop is how versions fork.
Word and PDF protect are other files
Protect Word owns DOCX encryption. Protect PDF owns PDF encryption. Converting Excel to PDF and then locking is a format change plus a password. Only do that if they asked for a PDF snapshot. If they still need formulas and tabs, lock the workbook.
Do not upload a Word file to Excel protect. Wrong suite.
When lock is the wrong lever
The email bounced because the file is huge: that is Compress Excel (or the workbook too large checklist first)—not a password.
They only need one sheet: Split Excel may be enough; locking a twenty-tab monster they will never open fully wastes everyone’s time.
They need a legal fence, not a casual open-password: a freelance contract is a different owner. A password slows casual opening; it is not an NDA and not legal advice.
Common misses
Putting the password in the same email as the attachment.
Uploading a PDF or DOCX to the Excel card.
Expecting Unlock to guess. The live FAQ already said no cracking.
Locking the only copy with no offline original.
Confusing protect with compress. Size and secrecy are different buttons on Excel Conversion.
