Fit keeps content and may add empty margin. Fill fills the sheet and may shave edges. That is the whole decision. There is no secret third mode in this article.

Sizes on the card: A4 210 × 297 mm, Letter 8.5 × 11 in, Legal 8.5 × 14 in.

Mixed-size PDFs (one Letter page, then A4) still go through one target. Proof every page. A signature that sat in the Letter margin can sit in the crop on Legal Fill.

Printers in the US often default to Letter. Many other offices default to A4. Ask which tray they will use. Do not “standardize” a filed court PDF if a clerk told you not to restamp the page box—that is process, not a converter trick.

If a client sent Letter and you must file A4 internally, keep both files: original plus converted. Do not overwrite the only copy.
