Zipping a .docx in Explorer is not the same job. A zip is a wrapper. Compress Word aims at a smaller Word file you can still open in Word.
If the file is already a PDF, use compress PDF. If charts must stay print-sharp, send a link to cloud storage and keep the original—do not crush the only copy.
Embedded fonts and huge screenshots are the usual weight. Cropping screenshots before they enter Word beats running compress twice.
Premium size on the card is locked until payment is enabled. If your file is over the free cap, the live card is the limit—this article will not invent a workaround.
A second pass of compress rarely recovers a file you already crushed. If it is still too big, remove pictures at the source or use split Word so each email carries one chapter.

Compress PDF is the PDF twin. Word to PDF is a format change, which can also drop size but is a different deliverable. Merge Word makes files larger, not smaller.
Common misses
Compressing, then sending without opening. Blurry logos show up in the client PDF later.
Running compress on a file that is already small. You only risk clarity.
Using compress as a substitute for deleting unused 12-megapixel hero images in the document. Delete first, compress second.
