Excluding Pages from Auto Ads in AdSense
Stop Auto ads on specific URLs in AdSense: page exclusions, prefix rules, unsupported query strings, and when to Apply to site.

Small blogs turn on Auto ads, then realize one template should stay clean—a homepage with a single CTA, a /start-here page, or a contact flow where overlays feel hostile. Page exclusions in AdSense let you stop Auto ads on specific URLs while leaving Auto ads enabled elsewhere on the same site. They are not a substitute for manual placement strategy, and they do not remove hand-pasted ad unit code by themselves.
Cluster owners: AdSense Auto Ads vs manual units (whether Auto ads fits your site at all), AdSense Auto optimize basics (experiments layer after Auto ads exist), and AdSense ads not showing when the problem is blank pages—not unwanted ads on one URL.
Page exclusions override Auto ads on listed URLs. Add clean paths, pick exact page vs section prefix, click Apply to site, then wait up to an hour before you judge live HTML.

What page exclusions change
Auto ads, once enabled with the site snippet, can place formats across eligible pages. Page exclusions tell Google not to show Auto ads on particular URLs you list. Help states that when you add a page exclusion it overrides Auto ads settings for those pages—other pages on the same site can still serve Auto ads if formats remain on.
That override is URL-scoped, not account-scoped. You manage exclusions per site under Ads → Edit site → Page exclusions, the same area Help documents in Exclude specific pages.
Why publishers use them:
- Keep a flagship landing page focused on email signup or product trial without anchor ads competing for attention.
- Leave policy or contact pages visually calm when aggressive in-page formats would clash with trust goals.
- Stop Auto ads on thin utility URLs while monetizing long guides—density judgment still matters; see ad density policy basics separately.
Page exclusions do not fix site approval labels, ads.txt problems, or invalid traffic—they only adjust where Auto ads may appear on an otherwise eligible site.
How exclusions differ from manual units
Auto Ads vs manual units decides how ads enter your theme. Page exclusions sit inside Auto ads settings after you chose Auto ads for that hostname.
Manual ad units are snippets you place in templates or blocks. If you pasted a display unit into footer.php, a page exclusion for Auto ads may not remove that manual box—Google’s exclude-pages article targets Auto ads on listed URLs. You still need theme logic (or removal) to hide manual code on pages you want entirely ad-free.
If you have not decided Auto vs manual yet, finish that decision before you maintain a long exclusion list on a site you might switch to manual-only placement.
Exact page vs section prefix
Help offers two match shapes when you add an exclusion:
| Choice in UI | Effect (paraphrased from Help) |
|---|---|
| This page only | Auto ads off on the exact URL match you entered. |
| All pages under this section | Auto ads off on URLs sharing that path prefix—Help’s example: entering example.com/sports excludes example.com/sports, www.example.com/sports, and example.com/sports/team, but not a different subdomain’s /sports. |
Prefix mode helps when an entire /topics/ hub or /tools/ directory should stay clean. Exact mode helps when only / (homepage) or one campaign landing path should differ from the rest of the blog.
Pick the narrowest rule that matches intent. Over-broad prefixes accidentally strip ads from high-value articles you meant to monetize—revenue impact varies by niche; we do not invent RPM lifts from exclusions.
URLs Auto ads exclusions reject
Help’s Unsupported URLs section warns that Auto ads page exclusions do not support:
- URLs with fragments (hash anchors such as
page#top) - URLs with query parameters (such as
page?q=target)
Enter the canonical address your site serves without tracking noise. If your CMS generates parameterized previews, exclude the stable public slug instead of a share link with ?utm= attached.
Also enter valid URLs—typos create a false sense of control while Auto ads continue on the live page you meant to exclude.
Step flow in the AdSense UI
Paraphrased from Exclude specific pages:
- Sign in to AdSense.
- Click Ads.
- In your sites table, click Edit next to the site.
- Under Page exclusions, click Manage.
- If exclusions already exist, click +Add exclusion (wording may vary).
- Enter the page or section URL.
- Choose This page only or All pages under this section.
- Click Add.
- Return to ad settings and click Apply to site.
Removal follows Manage → find the row → remove → Apply to site. Help notes changes can take up to an hour to apply on selected URLs—plan verification after that window, not seconds later.
Set up Auto ads lists page exclusions as an optional step during initial Auto ads setup; you can return later via Edit site as above.
Common pages publishers exclude
None of these are mandatory— they are patterns bloggers mention when Auto ads felt wrong on a template:
- Homepage when the design is a single hero CTA and anchor ads clash visually.
- Contact or support pages where overlay formats frustrate mobile taps.
- Start-here / newsletter landings where the only conversion is email.
- Short policy pages when even one in-page unit feels cramped (policy content still must meet AdSense program rules separately).
Before you exclude a high-traffic URL, note baseline performance in reports—exclusions trade ad impressions on that URL for UX. That trade is editorial, not a Google requirement in this article.
If ads are missing site-wide, switch to ads not showing—page exclusions do not explain a blank entire domain.
Excluded pages vs excluded areas
Auto ads settings documents both:
- Excluded pages — whole URLs where Auto ads should not appear.
- Excluded areas — regions inside a page layout where in-page Auto formats should not render.
Use excluded areas when one long article should keep ads in the sidebar but not over your hero image. Use excluded pages when the entire URL should stay Auto-ad-free. Help also notes you cannot run Auto optimize experiments on page exclusions—toggles and experiments are separate controls on Auto optimize.
A small-blog scenario
You run a blogging hub with Auto ads enabled site-wide. The homepage is a tight newsletter pitch; in-page Auto ads push the form below the fold on mobile. Articles monetize fine.
You open Ads → Edit site → Page exclusions, add your homepage URL with This page only, Apply to site, wait an hour, then load the homepage in a private window. Auto ads formats on posts should remain; the homepage should match your cleaner layout goal. Manual units in the footer, if any, need a separate theme check.
If I were doing this on a client site, I would screenshot the exclusion list and the live URL test—teams forget they added a prefix rule six months later and wonder why /topics/ stopped earning.
Mistakes after you exclude
- Entering parameterized share URLs Help cannot match—exclusion silently fails to cover the public slug.
- Assuming exclusions remove manual snippets pasted in the theme.
- Applying a section prefix too wide and stripping ads from money posts under the same path.
- Judging in thirty seconds—Help allows up to an hour for settings to apply.
- Using exclusions to bypass policy problems on thin or disallowed content—policy center issues need policy fixes, not URL hiding.

What are AdSense page exclusions?
Auto ads controls that stop Auto ads on specific URLs you list, overriding Auto ads on those addresses per Google Help.
Where do I add a page exclusion in AdSense?
Ads → Edit site → Page exclusions → Manage → Add → Apply to site. Confirm live menu labels in Help.

Not necessarily. They target Auto ads on listed URLs; manual placements may need theme changes.
Can I exclude URLs with query parameters?
Help lists query strings and hash fragments as unsupported for page exclusions—use clean canonical paths.
How long until exclusions take effect?
Up to an hour per Google’s exclude-pages Help.
Is this the same as excluded areas in Auto ads?
No. Areas are in-page regions; exclusions are whole URLs.
Should I exclude my homepage from Auto ads?
Optional UX choice. If you do, exclude the exact homepage URL Help accepts.
Where is official Help?
Exclude specific pages from showing Auto ads, Auto ads settings, and Set up Auto ads on your site.
Exclude with intent, then verify live
List URLs that should stay Auto-ad-free and why. Add exclusions with the smallest match type that fits. Click Apply to site, wait up to an hour, then verify both an excluded URL and a monetized article in a clean browser session. If manual units still appear, edit the theme layer. If nothing serves anywhere, return to Auto Ads vs manual and ads not showing—exclusions only trim Auto ads where you already chose Auto ads.
